Ideas for Rock Painting
Preparing your rocks for decorating: Make sure to rinse off any dirt and dust from your rock(s) with plain water and allow to dry before painting. Suggested materials for rock painting: • 3-4 different colors of acrylic paint • 1-2 paint brush(es); you can also use toothpicks, q-tips, and pencil erasers for dot painting • Paper plates or clean egg cartons, to squirt paint onto Blow dryer – use to dry your rock in between coats of paint • Weather resistant clear coating: examples include clear varnish, clear nail polish, waterproof Mod Podge • Cup of plain water • Rag or paper towels • Clean, clear work area; protect the surface underneath with newspaper or dropcloth, put your rock on a paper plate while painting and leave it on there to dry Other materials to use in decorating rocks: • Nail polish • Rub-on transfers • Stickers • Glitter / glitter glue • Googly eyes • Permanent markers • Paint pens • Stencils • Acryllic paint pens |
Suggested techniques: • Ladybug rocks: Pick a color and paint the rock one uniform color on all sides. Once dry, take a dark color (black) and paint one-third of one end of the rock, to be the ladybug head. Paint a thin line from the head down the back of the ladybug, and then make dots on the back of the ladybug. You can paint eyes directly on the ladybug, or glue googly eyes on. Allow to dry, then apply a clear coat of water-resistant seal. • Mandala rocks: Dot painting is simple and fun. Start with a big dot in the middle, then switch to smaller dots, then increase the size of the dots with each new circle. Have fun with colors and shapes. You can stick to mandalas, or you can dot paint simple designs on your rocks too. You can even trace a stencil (lightly, with a white colored pencil) onto a rock, then dot paint to fill it. • Flower gardens rocks: Dot painting can be used to make simple flowers too. • Pet rocks: Add googly eyes |
